We have been working with these materials since 1995. Customers like Jacky, who builds furniture, and Peter, who designs hotels, need to know this. I will tell you more about it.

Are rattan and bamboo the same?

Do you think rattan and bamboo are the same plant or material? No, they are not the same; they come from completely different types of plants.

Rattan is a long, solid vine from a palm tree. Bamboo is a grass with a hollow stem. They grow in different ways and have different strengths.

Plant Family

Rattan is part of the palm tree family. It grows by climbing other plants. Bamboo1 is a type of grass. It grows straight up and very quickly.

Physical Structure

Rattan’s inside is solid. This lets us bend it when it is hot and makes it good for furniture frames. We can also peel its outer skin to make thin strips. Bamboo is hollow inside, like a pipe. It is very strong when used straight, but it is hard to bend into complex curves. It is not good for making very fine woven patterns.

Availability and Cost

Since 2018, Indonesia has not allowed raw rattan to leave the country. This means there is not enough raw rattan in China, and its price is very high. Bamboo, on the other hand, grows very fast and is in great supply in China. This makes bamboo much cheaper and easier to get. This difference in supply has a big effect on prices.

Feature

Rattan (Cane)

Bamboo

Plant Type

Climbing Palm (vine)

Giant Grass

Inside Structure

Solid

Hollow, segmented

Bending Ability

High (when steamed)

Low (very rigid)

Common Use

Furniture frames, woven surfaces

Structural elements, decorative panels

Main Source

Indonesia

China

Current Cost Status

High, limited supply

Low, abundant supply

Is cane made of bamboo?

Do you think the material called "cane" comes from bamboo? No, that is not correct. Cane is actually made from the rattan plant2.

Cane is not from bamboo. It is made from the outer skin of the rattan vine. This skin is cut into thin strips and then woven into patterns.

When we talk about "cane," we almost always mean cane webbing. This is the woven material you see on chairs or cabinet doors. It comes from rattan. I often explain this to people like Adel, who needs to know the exact source of his materials. The term "cane" means the thin, outer layer of the rattan vine. We peel off this outer layer, cut it into narrow strips, and then weave these strips into patterns.

What Cane Is

"Cane" is a specific product from rattan. It is the strong, flexible outer part of the rattan vine. It is taken off and cut into long, thin pieces. These pieces are then used to make woven sheets, which are called cane webbing.

Difficulty with Bamboo

Bamboo’s structure is hollow and segmented. It is not easy to get the same kind of thin, long, flexible strips from bamboo that are good for fine weaving like traditional cane webbing. If bamboo is made into strips, they are usually harder and do not weave into the tight, open patterns of natural cane.

Weaving Qualities

Rattan cane is very good for weaving because it can become very flexible when wet. This helps us pull it tight when weaving. As it dries, it becomes firm and strong. Bamboo strips do not have this same quality, so they are not ideal for fine, traditional cane weaving. We do make bamboo webbing, but it looks different and has a different feel.

–

Which is better, cane or rattan?

Are you trying to decide if cane or rattan is "better" for your project? The truth is, "cane" is a part of and product of "rattan," so they are not truly compared against each other as separate plants.

"Cane" refers to the woven surface made from rattan’s outer skin. "Rattan" is the overall plant used for whole frames or processed parts. The "better" choice depends on your specific design needs.

As a supplier, I help customers like Jacky figure out the best material for their furniture. The terms are sometimes used confusingly. Rattan is the basic plant material. Cane is a type of product made from rattan.

–

Rattan for Structure
If you need to build the main frame of furniture, like chair legs or arms, you would use rattan poles. These poles are strong and can be bent into shape to make sturdy furniture.

Cane for Surfaces
If you need a flexible surface that breathes, like a chair seat or a cabinet door insert, then woven cane webbing is the right material. It is lightweight and offers a classic look. It is often used for decoration as well.

Rattan Quality Grades

We divide natural rattan into four quality grades: A, B, C, and D. Grade A is the best and costs the most. Grade C is a good choice for making chairs because it is strong enough and costs less. It might have some greenish marks, which is why it is cheaper, but it works well for furniture that will be painted dark. Grade D is best for decoration, like wall designs, because it is not strong enough for furniture that holds weight.

–

What is more expensive, bamboo or rattan?

Are you wondering which material will cost you more, bamboo or rattan? Natural rattan is generally more expensive than bamboo.

Natural rattan is more expensive because its supply is limited due to sourcing issues and export bans. Bamboo is cheaper because it grows quickly and is very abundant, especially in China.

I have seen the prices change a lot in my years in this business.

Rattan Price Increase

Since 2018, the Indonesian government stopped letting raw rattan leave their country. This caused a big problem for factories like mine in China, which need raw material. Because of this, the price of all rattan products went up a lot. Many customers, like Peter, could not use rattan for their projects because it became too expensive.

Bamboo’s Affordability

Bamboo is different. It grows very fast, and China has a lot of it. This means there is a steady supply and its price stays low. It is also a very sustainable material.

Our Solutions for Cost

Because natural rattan got so expensive, we started making Plastic Rattan Cane Webbing. It costs about half the price of natural cane webbing. We also made it in many colors to meet customer needs. Both natural rattan and bamboo can be processed efficiently with our weaving machines. This helps to keep the production cost down for both types of webbing.

–

Seafan Rattan Webbing & Seafan Bamboo Webbing?

Are you looking for a reliable supplier for rattan or bamboo webbing?
