What is the difference between wicker and rattan?

People often confuse wicker and rattan. Wicker is a weaving method, not a material. Rattan is a natural material.

Wicker refers to the way strands are woven to create furniture or baskets. Rattan is one material that can be used for wicker weaving, but other materials like willow, bamboo, or even synthetic fibers can also be woven using wicker methods.

I have seen many customers use the terms "wicker" and "rattan" as if they are the same. This is a common mistake. Wicker describes the style of furniture, or how it is made. Rattan describes what the furniture is made from. For example, a piece of furniture might be made of rattan, and it will be woven in a wicker pattern. So, if you want a rattan chair, you are asking for a chair made from rattan material. If you want a wicker chair, you are asking for a chair made using the wicker weaving¹ technique. The chair could then be made from rattan or from a synthetic material designed to look like rattan. My factories often supply the raw rattan cane webbing, and then our customers use it for their wicker weaving¹ projects themselves. This weaving style is very popular for its strength and ventilation.

What is a rattan material²?

Rattan material comes in many forms, each with specific uses. This includes rattan cane webbing, rattan core, rattan chair cane, rattan poles, rattan mats, and rattan webbing panels.

These forms are processed from the long, solid stems of the rattan palm. Each type has different properties that make it suitable for various needs in furniture making or decoration.

When I talk about rattan material², I am referring to the different parts of the rattan vine after it is harvested and processed. We grade our natural rattan material¹s into four types: A, B, C, and D. A grade is the best in quality and costs the most. It looks very clean and smooth. B grade is good too, but it costs less. C grade is very strong and useful, but it might have some green areas on its peel. Because of this green peel, it is not as popular for light-colored furniture, but it is actually the best choice for making rattan chairs that will be stained or painted a dark color. It is strong enough for chair seats and much cheaper. D grade rattan looks very beautiful, but it is not strong at all. It breaks easily. So, D grade is only good for decoration work, like wall or ceiling designs, not for furniture that needs to be strong. Knowing these grades helps our customers choose the right material for their project and budget.

Are bamboo and rattan the same?

No, bamboo and rattan are not the same. Bamboo is a hollow grass that grows straight and tall. Rattan is a solid, flexible climbing vine.

Bamboo is often used for structural elements because it is stiff. Rattan is used for weaving and bending into shapes because it is solid and very pliable.

Many times, customers come to me asking for "bamboo webbing." I always explain that what they likely need is tejido de caña de ratán³. Bamboo is a type of grass, and its stems are usually hollow. This makes bamboo great for poles or light structures, but it is not very flexible for weaving tight curves. Rattan, however, is a solid vine. This solid core gives rattan much more flexibility and strength when bent. Because it is solid, rattan can be cut into long, thin strips or round core pieces that are perfect for weaving intricate patterns. This is why rattan is the go-to material for woven furniture⁴, while bamboo is more often seen in decorative screens or as stand-alone poles. My factories specialize in rattan, which is perfectly suited for the complex designs our furniture maker and hotel project customers need.

Is rattan plastic or wood?

Ratán natural⁵ is not plastic. It is a plant-based material, more like wood in its fiber structure but much more flexible.

Plastic rattan, also called synthetic rattan or poly rattan, is a man-made product. It is designed to look like natural rattan but has different properties, especially for outdoor use.

Ratán natural⁵ comes from a specific type of palm. It is a natural fiber, much like wood, but it grows in long, vine-like stems that are easy to bend and weave. Since 2018, the cost of natural rattan has become very high because the Indonesian government banned the export of raw rattan material. This created a shortage in the China market where many of our factories are. To help our customers, we started developing Tejido de caña de ratán de plástico⁶. This material is made from synthetic fibers, and it costs about half the price of natural cane webbing. We now have many colors and weaving patterns for plastic rattan. We even mix it with other materials like wood, glass, and aluminum to make special panels. This synthetic option has become a best-seller because it gives the look of rattan with modern benefits.

The main disadvantage of natural rattan is its vulnerability to moisture and sunlight⁷. It can fade, mold, crack, or weaken if it gets continually wet or stays in direct sun.

While beautiful indoors, natural rattan needs careful maintenance to keep its strength and appearance. This limits its use in outdoor settings without proper protection.

Working with rattan for many years, I know its limits. Natural rattan is perfect for indoor furniture because it is breathable and beautiful. However, if it stays wet for too long, it can get moldy. Direct sunlight can also make it dry out and become brittle, losing its natural color. This is why natural rattan furniture is often placed in covered areas, even outdoors. But this disadvantage inspired me to innovate. Since 2025, we have developed more than 10 kinds of Plastic Rattan Cane Webbing that can be used outdoors. We have test reports showing they last a long time in hot, wet environments. This outdoor plastic webbing helps outdoor furniture manufacturers save about 80% on labor costs because they do not need to do as much human weaving on the whole chair. Can you get rattan wet?

You can get natural rattan wet for short periods, but it is important to dry it quickly and completely. Prolonged moisture exposure will damage it.

Water can cause natural rattan to swell, weaken, and grow mold. So, while a quick wipe is fine, leaving it exposed to rain or dampness is not recommended.

I always advise clients that natural rattan is not suitable for continuous outdoor use where it will be exposed to rain. If a natural rattan chair gets wet, such as from an accidental spill, you should wipe it dry immediately. Then, let it air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Never put it directly in the sun to dry, as this can make it brittle. For areas like hotel swimming pools or outdoor patios that are not fully covered, I recommend our outdoor plastic rattan cane webbing⁸. This material is specifically designed to withstand water and humidity. It gives the same beautiful rattan look without the worry of water damage. This makes it a much better choice for outdoor furniture that needs to last through various weather conditions.
